As a child I spent far too much time watching Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse and Gilligan. Around six o'clock or so, the channel would change and we'd watch the war. I remember bandaged men, in a jungle somewhere, muddy, and trying not to die.
My grandfather was in the Navy, my dad was in the Air Force, and I knew that someday I'd become a soldier too. Someday I'd be a man, I'd leave my family, I'd go far away, and I'd try not to die. It haunted me.
This never came to pass, others have made this journey in my stead and I've been able to stay home and play.
This book is a thank you to our military families who have surrendered precious time with their families.
